Press Release

ONLINE June 2, 2009 - Ales Mav, an animator living and working in the UK, has won $2,500 in the third SuperU.ca and TAC.tv Animation contest for his film “Daphne’s New Broom”. The animated short, chosen by an expert panel of judges, will also have the chance to be broadcast on Super Channel.

“I think Super U is a really well organized platform for artists showcasing their work and I believe the level of exposure can easily be compared to an average screening festival,” said winner Ales Mav. “Especially valuable are the contests on Super U that force artists to grow and constantly raise the quality level of their work. Supporting the best work with prize money is a great encouragement for the new talent and an invaluable contribution to the future of filmmaking.”

The jury was comprised of Ottawa International Animation Festival director Kelly Neall, Ottawa-based animator Jessica Borutski and Stéphanie Paquette of Salambo Productions and TAC.tv.

“Each film [in the competition] had its own personality and some unique strengths, but the winning film, “Daphne's New Broom” presents a very funny, original and polished screenplay that matches perfectly with the dynamic style of the animation. “Daphne's New Broom” was the most accomplished film of the competition,” stated a member of the jury.

This marks the third of four animation contests presented by SuperU.ca and online animation heavy-hitter TAC.tv. The best animated short in each contest will win $2,500, be featured on TAC.tv and have a chance for broadcast on Super Channel. An elite jury, including TAC.tv’s own Michel Beaudet, will award a prize for the best of the best at the completion of all four online contests. The next contest opens to entrants on June 18, 2009.

SuperU.ca is the online venue to watch the latest short films. Viewers enjoy high quality content, qualified by the viewers themselves. Filmmakers enjoy on-site contests and exposure to broadcasters like Super U’s partner Super Channel, Canada's national pay television network. As Super U grows, filmmakers will share in the advertising revenues generated on the site.

TAC.TV (a.k.a Têtes à claques) is former ad man Michel Beaudet’s original Canadian production of Web-based short, animated clips. Through a unique combination of claymation and video that superimposes live action on dolls and clay, the absurdly funny storylines feature a wide cast of unforgettable characters. Since its launch in mid-August 2006, the websites www.tac.tv and www.tetesaclaques.tv have garnered 520 million page-views and attracts more than a million fan each month. (source: Google Analytics).
